The new Mazda CX-9 will be one of the upcoming models that will be launched by Bermaz, either at the end of the year or early 2017. Our very own Jonathan Lee, who is currently in Japan to test drive thefacelifted Mazda 3, managed to get up close with the second-generation model, and snapped a few photos of the seven-seat SUV for your viewing pleasure.
Wearing the latest Kodo Soul of Motion design, the new CX-9 features the brand’s signature grille and LED headlamps (with LED DRLs). The car seen here also wears Mazda’s new premium colour – Machine Grey, which joins Soul Red.
Meanwhile, the rear features a set of sleek 3D-design LED tail lights which are linked together by a chrome strip just above the Mazda logo. Pan downwards, and you’ll spot the CX-9’s dual exhaust tips, with another piece of chrome trim located slightly above it.
As for the interior, everything has been completely revamped, and made more upmarket than before as well. Familiar items here include the car’s heads-up display, MZD infotainment system and automatic climate control. Leather seats are also part of the getup, and as stated earlier, there’s enough room for seven inside, with second-row air-con vents.
Aside from its looks, the other highlight of the new CX-9 lies under the hood, where you’ll find the brand’s SkyActiv-G 2.5T – a 2.5 litre direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with both i-stop and i-ELOOP technology.
The mill in the US-spec model develops up to 250 hp and 420 Nm when running 93-octane petrol in the US (227 hp on 87-octane). For the Australian market, 228 hp and 420 Nm is provided from the turbo engine (running on RON 91). A Skyactiv-Drive six-speed torque converter automatic transmission is mated to the engine, with Mazda’s i-Activ all-wheel drive system available as an option.
Safety-wise, the CX-9 was recently awarded a five-star rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) thanks to standard equipment such as dual frontal, dual frontal chest and curtain airbags, as well as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and low-speed autonomous emergency braking (AEB, forward and reverse), part of the brand’s i-Activsense safety suite.
Oddly, despite being built in Japan, the CX-9 is not sold in its own domestic market. As we’ve mentioned earlier, the model is said to arrive in Malaysia by end-2016 or early next year. Interested? Well, Bermaz hasn’t provided any hint to the SUV’s pricing, but according to a local dealer, the CX-9 will be priced under the RM250k mark. www.paultan.org
